South Side Yoga offers a wide variety of classes for:

  • Males and Females
  • Beginners to experienced Yoginis / Athletes
  • Mature or Young students
  • Those with physical limitations (strength, flexibility, balance) or those in great physical condition

We “pick you up” where you are today and through personal guidance enhances your quality of life through better health and a greater awareness of your body, mind & spirit.

Class Series for Yoga Fundamentals Level 1
To help you understand what this means for you, you could think of our Yoga Fundmentals class series in the same way like a Ballet studio, a cooking class, a language course or a ballroom dance school offers their classes – in a series that has a specific length of time – 4, 6, 8, or 12 weeks. The benefits include:

  • The series has a defined beginning and an end
  • Specific content is taught and learned within that time frame
  • This content builds upon each previous class and assures steady growth in learning and practice level for the entire group
  • A set term of commitment, which you make to yourself and which helps you stay on track as you make this part of your schedule a priority
  • Over the course of a year you will experience a steady improvement and significant changes in your understanding of yoga techniques, and awareness of your own body

This concept is not uncommon in yoga studios around the globe and has been taught in that tradition for decades. Our beloved yoga master B.K.S. IYENGAR introduced this class series system to the west in the 1960s and it has been taught in IYENGAR yoga schools following his tradition all over the world ever since in 6, 12 or 24-week series.

Level 2 Classes

Our level 2 Posture Focus and Vinyasa Flow classes are taught as a weekly ongoing class with a special topic for each month. Throughout the month each weekly class builds upon the previous class; each student understands that for maximum benefit the classes must be attended sequentially.

Yoga Fundamentals level 1 with Emme
4 week series starting the 1st Monday of each month

The perfect introductory series for the yoga newbie, with either no yoga experience or a little experience through videos or prior classes. The benefits include:

  • The physical fundamentals of yoga practice (ASANAS)
  • Safety and injury prevention
  • Proper breathing techniques
  • Basic core awareness and strengthening
  • Introductory meditation and relaxation techniques
  • Mindfulness practice

Every class will introduce a different physical, mental and spiritual part of yoga, so that after 4 weeks the student has learned a great overview of the benefits yoga has to offer.
This course is not a therapeutic course and is aimed towards generally healthy students (including little aches and pains), who would like to start studying yoga to improve their physical health and balance emotional and mental stress in their lives.

Alignment based yoga – level 2

This is a perfect class for the sincere yoga practitioner, who wants a deeper understanding of the yoga ASANAS as well as some select breathing techniques. I designed this class many years ago and have improved upon it ever since to focus specifically on the physical part of each yoga class which is the main content of almost all yoga classes in our western world. This course will include following benefits:

  • The essence of select yoga postures from every traditional asana group (standing, seated, balancing, twisting, back bending, and forward folding as well as core strengthening and hip/shoulder opening, recovery)
  • The proper technique, modification and use of props to insure safety and prevent injury
  • Anatomical specifics as well as personal awareness and understanding of your own physical strengths and limitations, which will greatly help to improve your personal practice.

Be invited to take your yoga practice to the next level and keep studying and enjoying the benefits of a dedicated yoga practice. Along the way you will:

  • Improve your posture
  • Learn about your daily movement habits (at home, at work, etc.) and how to change them to healthier choices
  • Practice homework exercises, to help deepen the learned exercises

This series is not suited for the complete yoga newbie, but requires the completion of our Yoga Level 1 introductory series or a regular yoga practice of at least 4-6months. All students meeting these requirements are cordially invited. Participation (if you have not been part of our studio in the past) will be determined in a personal meeting with Emme.

Ashtanga based yoga – level 2

Ongoing weekly class with monthly topic focus

Vinyasa Flow is a modern, very popular yoga style, based on the Ashtanga Yoga Tradition taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. In FLOW YOGA the movements are linked with deep breathing techniques and create an athletic, physically more challenging experience which allows us to experience a beautiful meditative state (hence = “in the flow”) with a concluding deep relaxation at the end. The ASANAS are practiced in a flowing movement and require the student to have a good understanding about the postures. Otherwise injuries can occur, which we are trying to avoid:

  • Each class contains yoga of all main ASANA groups as well as breathing and relaxation techniques to offer a holistic yoga experience
  • We will learn ONE specific flow sequence which stays the same over the entire course to assure growing into the sequence through repetition (the first 4 weeks of learning the sequence, the second 4 weeks of practicing the entire sequence)
  • After those 8 weeks you will be receiving the gift of great accomplishment.

This class is geared toward the dedicated yoga practitioner who has practiced for at least 6 months and it is a natural evolution for most students to take their practice to the next level. This January/February series will be inviting all of our yoga students who have been with us for a while to practice what they have learned so far. I will teach Vinyasa Flow Level 1 from scratch and everybody who has been practicing with us can attend even if you have never practiced Flow Yoga before. This series however is not suited for yoga newbies or students with great physical limitations.

  • Class series are limited and can be registered only as the entire series. There are no drop-ins and no refunds.
  • Registration and payment for any of the class series has to be completed before the first class of the chosen series. Your spot will only be secured through payment of the entire series.
